If you've just been diagnosed, you are probably feeling a lot of things right now. You might be feeling scared, worried or anxious, or have regrets. You might be scared that you are going to die.
There is one thing to remember: you are OK!
People with HIV are living longer than ever before thanks to good treatment and health management. However, you might be feeling overwhelmed at the idea of starting treatment or disclosing to friends and family of your status.
To start, please view this video from our national partner, CATIE: Just diagnosed with HIV.
You should know that the only thing that has really changed is that you now have a virus that you will live with for the rest of your life. However, you will have to make some decisions. You've probably already thought about them:
These decisions can be difficult to make, but can be made easier if you know the facts. Follow these steps to make the right choices:
Learn as much as you can about HIV. Check our our resources on this website. When you're ready, you can also come talk to us about you and your HIV status and we can provide further information.
Make sure that you are ready to deal with this diagnosis. Be mentally ready to tell your family or friends if you choose to do this. Remember, no one has to know your status except for you (or any partners that you might engage in risky activities with).
Find a doctor with sensitivity towards HIV positive persons. Get in touch with us if you want to find a doctor who can treat HIV. The infectious disease specialist is located in Moncton, NB. We can help you become a patient as well as help you get a doctor in this province. If you don't have a doctor, get on the patient registry immediately. Call 1-800-321-5492 and have your health card ready. Once you are on the registry, it becomes much easier to find you a general practitioner.
